Plant dispersal syndromes are unreliable, especially for predicting zoochory and long?distance dispersal

چکیده
Plant dispersal syndromes are allocated based on diaspore morphology and used to predict the dominant mechanisms of dispersal. Many authors assume that only angiosperms with endozoochory, epizoochory or anemochory have a long-distance (LDD) mechanism. Too much faith is often placed in classical explain historical events future ones. What usually recorded as ‘endozoochory syndrome' reality ‘frugivory this has diverted attention from endozoochory by non-frugivores (e.g. waterbirds large herbivores) disperse broad range angiosperms, for which they likely provide maximum distances. Neither nor helpful predictions plants disperse, We combined data previous studies show 4% European plant species dispersed ungulate belong corresponding syndrome, compared 36% 8% migratory ducks. In contrast, proportions these assigned an ‘unassisted 37, 31 28%, respectively. Endozoochorous seed dispersal of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands
During last two decades studies on endozoochorous seed dispersal indicated that a large numbers of plant seeds are potentially dispersed and suceefully germinated via animal dung. However, very little is known about the relative importance of endozoochory in germination success of plant species in semi-steppe rangelands. In this paper we examined dung germinating seed content, seed deposition p...

متن کاملDispersal syndromes and the use of life-histories to predict dispersal
Due to its impact on local adaptation, population functioning or range shifts, dispersal is considered a central process for population persistence and species evolution. However, measuring dispersal is complicated, which justifies the use of dispersal proxies. Although appealing, and despite its general relationship with dispersal, body size has however proven unsatisfactory as a dispersal pro...
متن کاملWorkshop on Plant Dispersal and Migration Modeling
Global environmental change is causing shifts in the geographical locations of habitats suitable for particular plant species. While it is established that the future distributions of plant species will be strongly influenced by the ability of plants to migrate to sites of suitable habitat, our ability to predict potential and actual migration rates is rudimentary. This workshop organized by th...

The evolution of plants exhibiting different sexes, or dioecy, is correlated with a number of ecological and life-history traits such as woody growth form and animal-dispersed seeds, but the underlying causes of these associations are unclear. Previous work in seed plants has suggested that the evolution of fleshy cones or seeds may favour dioecy. In this study, we use a well-sampled molecular ...
